USC vs. Ohio State - Notes From Around the Web
2008-09-11 13:51:14

The big news today:

"Ohio State coach Jim Tressel says it's doubtful that starting tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells will play Saturday night against top-ranked USC...Tressel said Thursday there was lingering soreness for Wells after he worked out the night before. Wells did not practice with the team Thursday morning." -ESPN.com/AP

This seems almost predictable on Jim Tressel's part here. Yes, it's a huge game that they would LOVE to win. But the safe route (in benching their injured star) may also be the best long-term decision.

If, let's say, Tressel plays Wells at 80% on Saturday and it's still not enough to beat the Trojans, his team is in a tough spot. I can't think up many scenarios in which the Buckeyes will have a convincing argument to get into the national championship game, should they run the table. Which, may I remind you, is a very realistic scenario. Here are the Buckeyes 9 remaining opponents after USC...

When it comes time to start swaying the BCS pollsters and determining who the best 1 and 2 loss teams are, Ohio State could have the biggest excuse of them all. "Yaaaa, BUT...we didn't have our star player in our biggest game". I'm being presumptuous but I don't think it's crazy to think that both Jim Tressel and Chris Wells considered this. They have a lot of talent behind #28 at tailback. Enough talent to hold a very good Buckeye team together, and give these Trojans a fight like everyone has been expecting.

Pac-10 writer, Ted Miller, gives his prediction for the game (written before the Wells injury news):

"USC 28, Ohio State 17: I'd been thinking upset on this one for a while, so I expected to pick Ohio State. Felt the Buckeyes were due for a vindicating, national victory. But I can't get over this: USC is just freaking loaded with talent. The Trojans have no match in college football in terms of talent throughout their depth chart."

Sounds good to me. When in doubt, go with Vegas (USC -11).

More good stuff via eTrueSports.com's Todd Covert, who is a graduate of both Ohio State and the University of Southern California. This funny video deserves a watch...

Now that it appears the Buckeye running game will be without it's biggest threat, the OSU passing game takes on increased importance. Trojan Football Analysis has a great article on the Ohio State passing attack.

Finally, thanks to Conquest Chronicles for finding this; Mark May & Lou Holtz go back and forth on USC vs. OSU. Some things never change...
