Individual Defensive Player Notes (USC @ UVA 8/30/08)
2008-08-31 18:05:36

The hard work during training camp paid off in Charlottesville on Saturday.

I said it yesterday during the live blog, it's really hard to ask for much more from these Trojans in their first game. We had some question marks along the offensive line. Not anymore. Our receivers were labelled as underperformers. Not anymore. Is everyone putting too much stock in one game against a very unmatched opponent? Probably. Either way, let's take a look at the defense.

Reviewing the Game Tape: Individual Defensive Player Notes (USC vs. Virginia 8/30/08)

Kevin Ellison had 2 nice pass breakups early, both of which could've been interceptions.

Fili Moala and Everson Griffen were getting pressure on the quarterback all day. A lot of Lalich's questionable throws can attributed to these 2 guys.

Speaking of which, I noticed an interesting defensive line change-up; On the second of back to back false starts (induced by who else, Griffen, both times), Kyle Moore, lined up to left of Grif on the right side of the line. No wonder that left tackle jumped, that's a scary 1-2 punch coming at you.

Starting corners Cary Harris and Shareece Wright had nice days in the secondary. Their presence was also made known in the run-stopping department. There were a few big plays avoided thanks to some good open field tackling from Cary and Shareece.

In my opinion, Kaluka Maiava very quietly had the most productive day of all the linebackers. That's one of those things that is surprising and not surprising at the same time.

Clay Matthews' sack in the 1st quarter was a result of a) his speed playing that hybrid position and b) great scheme. On the play Matthews lined up at the right end position and stunted through the middle beautifully to sack the young quarterback. They only sent a 4-man rush and it's all they needed.

Josh Pinkard had great coverage on the receiver that caught the deep out during the Cavs' only touchdown drive. It was a big play for Virginia but Josh did everything right. Just a perfect throw from Lalich.

You won't see it on the stats sheet, but you should. Rey Maualuga appeared to scare Peter Lalich into fumbling a good snap when the relentless MLB came full speed through the middle of the line in the 4th quarter.

Taylor Mays, FS, really shined in the 2nd half. He was his usual self. Big hits and great coverage. He had an interception that fell out of his hands and reminded me why this physical phreak is on defense, and not offense.

Kevin Thomas' interception was just as nice the second time watching it.

Malcolm Smith ("the other #6"), and Uona Kaveinga both came in as reserve linebackers in the 2nd half. They showed me that the linebacking corps in '09, '10, and '11 look just as strong as ever (Relatively. Cushing, Rey and Kaluka are an irreplaceable trio).

A couple other numbers I saw late in the 2nd half, flying around the field and making plays: #81 Gerald Washington, and #97 Malik Jackson.

An analysis of Sanchez's game and the passing attack is up next...
