Pac-10 Statistical Team Preview: Starters Experience & Unity Index
2008-08-11 19:06:16

Vidal Hazelton. Mike Richardson - USCFootball.com

First up, you got to see this. It's my statistical breakdown of the Pac-10 teams using an index I developed myself. And before I go on, let me say that this is by no means an overall ranking of the teams. Instead, I consider it a very small but important piece in analyzing and comparing teams. It's a measure of an offense or defenses' experience (column [A] in the table) multiplied by a unity factor (column [B]). Column A is derived by summing the experience points of individual players on either the offensive or defensive side of the ball (the 11 [projected] starters) using the following format:

ClassExp. points
Freshman1
Sophmore2
Junior3
Senior4

For example, if UCLA hypothetically decided to start 11 freshman on offense, they would receive an offensive exp score of 11 (11 starters x 1 point). The unity factor (column B) is a score from 1.0-2.1 that is calculated from the number of returning (proven) starters. For example, the defensive unity factor would be 1.7 if there were 7 returning starters on defense. The product of column A and column B gives the final score I'm looking for. Simple enough, right. Let's apply this to the Pac-10, offense first...
Rank Pac-10 Offenses [A]
Exp. Score
[B]
Unity Factor
[C]
Starters Experience
& Unity Index
1 Arizona 32 2 64
2 Arizona State 37 1.6 59.2
3 Stanford 35 1.6 56
4 Washington State 34 1.6 54.4
5 Oregon 35 1.5 52.5
6 California 34 1.4 47.6
7 Oregon State 33 1.4 46.2
8 Southern California 32 1.4 44.8
9 UCLA 33 1.3 42.9
10 Washington 26 1.6 41.6

Don't worry, we look better on the defensive side of the analysis...

Rank Pac-10 Defenses [A]
Exp. Score
[B]
Unity Factor
[C]
Starters Experience
& Unity Index
1 Stanford 39 1.7 66.3
2 Southern California 38 1.7 64.6
3 Washington State 35 1.8 63
4 California 36 1.7 61.2
5 Oregon 36 1.6 57.6
6 Arizona State 35 1.6 56
7 UCLA 38 1.4 53.2
8 Oregon State 38 1.3 49.4
9 Washington 26 1.6 41.6
10 Arizona 32 1.3 41.6

Just something interesting to consider as we approach the start of the season.

Morning Practice Notes

   - Mustain had a couple nice touchdown passes. The first to Scott Stephens for 20 yards. His second touchdown pass came during a hail mary drill that Damian Williams (ofcourse) snagged out of the air for 45 yards. Mays and promising looking young LB Uona Kaveinga had a couple nice interceptions thrown by Mitch.
   - Offense was sluggish at times but some of that can be attributed to the WR injuries. Hazelton, RoJo, Cameron (Mr. Jump Ball as I call him now), and Butler were all on the sidelines.
   - Aaron Corp did lead the 2 minute drill with the first team today, but that appears to be nothing more than Carroll doing his usual mix-it-up thing in open competitions.
   - I must have jinxed David Buehler; Shane Horton had a nice block on one of David's field goals near the end of practice.

I'll leave you with this; an awesome look into the life of a Trojan from the USCRipsIt blog...

"It's early in the morning, but you wouldn't know it from the recently completed team meeting.

Players were downright giddy, yelling and chanting to start the meeting less than 12 hours after they wrapped up last night's practice. Then Coach Carroll commenced the meeting by showing top plays from the scrimmage-like workout Sunday night.

"Oh, there's so many highlights," Carroll excitedly said while flying through the film.

After the highlights were over, Carroll put on a tape of Monday's enthralling 4x100 freestyle relay at the Beijing Olympics, causing the Trojans to rise to their feet as they cheered on the Americans to victory in the spine-tingling race.

The motivation has been supplied; practice is up at 11 a.m."

I know I'm not the only one who's a little jealous...
